Not For Crossword Puzzles March 14, 2010 R. Kruppa While the E550 is a good dictionary it's crossword puzzle functions leave a lot to be desired. Most crossword clues are two or three words which the E550 will allow (phrase search) but always the search comes up empty. In working with Sharp's customer service they admitted the E550 can only be used for the easiest of puzzles. I would agree
The dictionary lookups were quite good. However, there were some strange quirks no only in definitions but displaying similar words.
To me the E550 is outdated both in function as well as the display. The LCD is okay but would be significantly better if it had a color display like most cell phones have. I definitely would pay extra for a color display that has more resolution.
I would not recommend the E550. It's is in need of an upgrade.
Useful February 2, 2010 A. Stockwell I am in Chiropractic school and was hoping that it had some more medical health terms. It has alot of content but there are a few times that I was looking for something that was not there. It is very useful though.
Sharp E550 Electronic Dictionary January 30, 2010 Raaja (Santa Clara, CA United States) 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
The product does what it claims.
The only thing I don't like is the screen. The screen isn't bright enough to see in the dark. In the set-up, you can change the screen contrast, but does not help in gloomy conditions.
Otherwise, E550 is agreat product.
Great portable-dictionary January 25, 2010 Pete T. Simmons (NY, NY, USA) 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
I love this little Sharp electronic dictionary. I read many papers and find the convenience and power of this small device simply amazing. It always accompany's me while on the computer and I am in a constant state of learning new words. The "History" feature lets me "remember" what I forgot. Get this device since it is GREAT!!

Best Electronic Dictionary - soon to be usurped by wifi and cellular devices? January 23, 2010 A. R. Higgins (Queen City, NC) 2 out of 2 found this review helpful
This is the easiest and most intuitive electronic dictionary. I bought my son some other dictionary marketed for "students" hoping the definitions would be easier for him to understand. I wish I just bought another of these. When it comes to figuring out the spelling of a word, the dictionary display begins to build with words as you type. This helps greatly. When he has to look up a word on the Franklin, it just comes up blank when a word is misspelled. There is also a spelling lookup that some may prefer, but the dictionary function is quicker. If you're getting to the end of spelling your word and it's not on the list, you know you have to backspace and rethink the letters. There have been very few words this has not covered. I am a 30+ college student. As a quick reference, I will use this until a more intuitive app for a wifi/cell gadget comes along that works better, but I don't see it happening soon. This device is hard to beat.
